On arrival at the scene, our incident supervisor found this articulated refrigerated lorry down a single track unmade lane adjacent to a main road. It appeared he had made a wrong turn and whilst trying to reverse out of the situation listed over into a ditch and was unable to move.

Our incident supervisor called for our Renault Premium with NRC sliding crane. Positioning the recovery vehicle carefully on the adjacent road allowed them to make the most of the hard standing available. Using the twin winches, the team of two operators laid one of the cables off to a tree in front of the casualty. They went round the tree with a chain and snatch block, this winch came out under the fence to a point low down on the front axle which allowed the casualty to be winched forward. The second line came off the top boom to a stop over the rear of the trailer to act as a support and to assist in the sideways pull to get the casualty out of the ditch.

Working with two way radios, the two operators worked the twin winches together to get the vehicle back upright and ready to reverse out of the lane. However during the reversing manoeuvre the casualty again became stuck and required further winching all the way backwards down the lane until it reached a turnaround point that allowed it to drive onto the hardstanding area.
